The sight of the flag, "tiny and wonderful, standing clear against the sky above that awful mountain," in the words of a CBS radio correspondent, Don Pryor, brought cheers from the tired marines and sailors below. James V. Forrestal, the Secretary of the Navy, who had come from Washington to observe the operation, turned to Marine Gen. Holland M. (Howlin' Mad) Smith and declared, "Holland, the raising of that flag on Suribachi means a Marine Corps for the next 500 years."

And this fight pales to what was to come next - Okinawa...
