I first read of this in The Fountains of Paradise by Arthur C Clarke, I'd sent it in here before, I knew it'd be done sooner or later, I don't mind Japan doing it, neingas they're a democracy, obviously, however, that those Commie morons in Peking apparently are trying also I just quite honestly can't stomach, you know?

I knew it'd be tried sooner or later, it was a question of when, Arthur C Clarke was really serious about it...I just wish those Commie morons weren't also trying it, as I'd said, any democracy, fine, Commies, obviously the idea makes me retch, quite frankly....

I don't see anything in the physics that's doubtful. I think the physics of the idea is solid. Hell we've all swung stuff around in a circle on a string as kids, and that's effectively all this is. It's materials science that needs to catch up.
