The thing I really miss about the Air Force is the ability to help people, even in small ways, with the challenges they face day to day. This is something I try to do in my business, but some days, it just doesn't feel like I really make any impact.
But the BEST thing about having my own business is that when there is a chance to use the skills I have to help someone, I can do it (without worrying about some random staff meeting or "urgent" tasking taking all my time).
I know most military members and veterans also feel that pull to help others. Here's a story of a military member who was recently diagnosed with a rare form of cancer and is currently undergoing treatment which requires him and his wife to spend weeks across the country from their family and friends. However, this couple feels that "pull to help" so strongly, that they are fighting not only against this disease, but also to create a means to help others who are facing similar challenges. They have started a nonprofit foundation to help raise awareness of and help those fighting rare illnesses.
I'm honored to be a small part of their effort. You can learn more about their story and effort at Jbirdsjourney.org.
