Thanks for reminding us TSgt Joe C. that on June 1, 1871 one of the deadliest men in the history of the Old West named John Wesley Hardin arrived in Abilene, Kansas, where he briefly becomes friends with Marshal Wild Bill Hickok.
A century later or so Bob Dylan released an album named John Wesley Hardin.

The violence that became so endemic across the late nineteenth century U.S. could only be overshadowed by the present day violence of the drug epidemic. Back in the 19 century, the people were spread out thin, infrastructure of any kind still waiting to be built, and so the people were left to deal with lawbreakers on their own.
