Thank you my friend SGT (Join to see) for making us aware that on November 30, 1016, Cnut the Great [Canute], King of Denmark, claimed the English throne after the death of Edmund 'Ironside'.

The article has an interesting twist on the old whipping the waves story. I heard from my mother (of Dane and Norwegian extraction), and also was later taught in school, that Canute had sycophantic courtiers whip the waves to demonstrate even the might of a king was helpless in the face of nature. The article presents the incident as an act of hubris, the first time I have ever heard that explanation. I guess the point is moot as the whole thing probably never happened, anyway.
