'Was it alive?'

Mr Chambers said the koala may have been struck by a car. The picnic area was close to a road in Imbil, about 120km (75 miles) north of Brisbane.

"My gut feeling is that it was hit but why would you screw a koala to a wooden structure?" he said.

"And was it alive when they did it?"

The koala was fixed to the pole with building screws, local media reported.

The RSPCA has requested an autopsy as part of an investigation, spokesman Michael Beattie said.

OK, SO A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE GETTING BENT OUT OF SHAPE over what may not actually be a case of animal cruelty at all. Typical, predictable, behavior.

If the animal was dead, then I don't care one wit about this...there is no "animal cruelty" involved at all. At best, a distasteful act, but no more.

People look at Koalas and think "cute and cuddly". But they have sharp claws and teeth and are not afraid to use them when threatened. Holding a live, especially wild, Koala still while screwing it to a post? I'm thinking there'd be a bit of an armed struggle there, with teeth and claws coming into play. They HAVE been known to attack dogs and humans.

If I pick a cat up and stuff it into a trash can, I'd be castigated for it (and rightfully so). If I pick a dead cat up and stuff it into a trash can, people can get stuffed. If I toss a dead cat onto a fire, people can get stuffed. If I dig a hole and bury the dead cat, people can get stuffed. If I toss it out for the coyotes, people can get stuffed.

The cat is dead...the cat can't be "abused".
