The holiday marks the day in 2008 when the constitution of Kosovo was ratified by the people of Kosovo. A small landlocked territory, Kosovo borders countries Serbia, Albania, Macedonia, and Montenegro. Part of erstwhile Yugoslavia, the country was the ground of NATO-led airstrikes in 1998 and 1999, dubbed the Kosovo War. The constitution, completed in 2008, aimed to unify the country and establish a democratic and peaceful state for its people. The 2008 constitution also states Kosovo’s desire for Euro-Atlantic integration.
