Thanks for sharing an interesting post from the time when duels were fought over honor SGT John " Mac " McConnell. For centuries prior to this duels were fought generally between nobility or people of military renown. With a Scottish heritage it is not surprising that his family emigrated from Scotland to the new world. He seems to have had a distinguished military career. Although his father was captured by the Spanish during the war between Spain and England when he was 18 he seems to have done well for himself in a difficult century.
By the middle of the 19th century duels had pretty much been outlawed in our nation. However duels would take place in the western USA in the form of gunfights.= which sometimes were more ambush than duel - except in the movies :-)

SGT John McConnell- You post great American history. Very enlightening. Virginia Military Institute awards the two top all around grads Order of Cincinattus medals. George C. Marshall got one in 1907, when he graduated. He had PA NG service before starting his cadetship. He was a zero demerits cadet and the Regimental Commander his senior year.
