Okay, to join the military, you have to be a US Citizen or a Green Card Holder, ie: Legal Permanent Resident (LPR). Unfortunately, if you served in the military as a LPR, I would assume you would still be subject to deportation if you committed certain crimes. They probably aren't going to deport you for a DUI or shoplifting, but if you end up on "Dateline- To catch a predator", that's probably not going to go very far in your favor. I think this article is hoping to catch our emotions by saying veterans are being deported, but doesn't say why they are being deported. If you are legal (LPR) and you served honorably and you stay crime free from the most serious of crimes, you will have nothing to worry about.
I have yet to come across any veterans that have been deported, are facing a deportation hearing, or have had an ICE detainer placed on them pending deportation. Granted, I am just one piece of the pie but personally I haven't seen it in the about 3000 records I have reviewed this year pertaining to immigration issues.

A lot of Veterans have issues with drugs, drug charges can get a Veteran deported. If you read the actual study which the article references, the context becomes a lot easier to understand. It is definitely not common, the ACLU could only find a little over 200 cases in total and was only able to interview about 59 of those. In all of the few I read, the veteran had committed a crime such as assault or got caught with enough drugs they were changed with intent to distribute.
I would like to see things changed to where an honorably discharged Veteran can not be deported for any reason.
