That's a tough question because I knew of technically competent Soldiers that couldn't lead a chain gang down a brightly lit hallway with directional arrows. Then again, I knew of charismatic Leaders that were dumb as a sack of hair.
Honestly, leadership qualities and competence are like an offense and a defense in football. You can't have one without the other. If you only have one or rely on only one, then it will be your subordinates that will suffer in the end

This is a great article. The whole "fake it til you make it" concept, promotes the perception that it's acceptable to pretend to have answers even if you don't (essentially, making it up as you go). In their book, "Think Like a Freak", Levitt and Dubner set out to prove, one of the most detrimental problems within Corporate America is that people are terrified of saying "I don't know".
I must admit, the most shocking piece of the article for me, was that EVEN after the groups were informed of which team members had expert knowledge, the majority STILL didn't choose that person as their leaders.
That probably speaks volumes about how people like Donald Trump rise to places like Presidential Candidate.

PO2 (Join to see), well said. I say frequently, "I hope that I'm not the smartest guy in the room. If I am, then we're all in real trouble." Thankfully, I've been broken of the fear of "I don't know." Combat commanders expect that response from time to time and I'll be the first one to get the answer back, as soon as I find it!
