Love the article. The first time my company commander came up to me as a TAMMS Clerk, and said he wanted to pick my brain, scared the daylights out me, in the back of my mind i asked myself what would happen if I gave him a wrong answer? I just attended my Cohort FA Battery Reunion, in talking to the Battery Commander, he told me that he couldn't count the times how many times that I and the Motor Sergeant saved his butt. I've had commanders who didn't dare ask questions and seen them fall on their face because of the lack of information, if I could I would interject an answer. during my time with OCS, the Regimental Commander wanted to test our S4 and asked a logistical question. Not knowing the answer our S4 asked the S4 NCOIC and myself (I was the Assistant NCOIC) separately. The Major went to the Colonel and gave the commander his answer. When the Major finished, the Colonel stated that was the same answers he go from the senior members of the S4. The Major asked then why did you ask me the question. The Colonel replied, "I wanted to see if you would use you most valuable resources.

As a Battery XO and then a Battalion S4, I found maintenance- and supply-related stuff to be really hard to "get right" -- so many moving parts and places where things go wrong without warning. Thanks for sharing this.
