I had some interesting employment options before finishing my degree. In many fields, certifications and portfolio trump degrees any day.

I think this is especially true of the proliferation of certain liberal arts degrees (not to mention the debt) that are difficult to translate into a 'real time' career. One daughter chose college (though business major), son chose UNOH's high performance automotive program w/ avg starting salary of 50k - not bad for a trade.

Furthering one's education is never a waste. However, I do believe there should be ample opportunity for students to go to trade schools if they do not wish to go to college. But high school alone is not sufficient to ensure a good future. (with the exception of going into the military).

One aspect of finishing college is the person shows they have the drive to complete the course. No employer wants a person that drops out because of laziness.
