China needs land and has only two directions in which to expand: Siberia and Indochina. Both are rich in the resources that China desperately needs. If it fails, China will suffocate in its own population. Indeed, it already is. I suspect that Siberia is the better option. Although the climate is harsher, Siberia is sparsely populated and Russia's only defense would be the nuclear option. However, in a war with India, it would be a battle of the masses, one that China would likely win with the added benefit of eliminating some of its surplus population in the process. Choices, choices...

Agreed; however, China is not focused on Siberia. Instead; China seems to want highlands and salt flats within India.

CPT Gurinder (Gene) Rana - I'm not familiar with the "salt flats". What resources are there? Is it habitable? Siberia is rich in resources, minerals and oil, and it is habitable (barely during the winter).

Aksai Chin is salt flats in Kashmir, due east of Leh in Ladakh, which became the Chinese Occupied Kashmir (COK) in 1899 with the LAC drawn by the British along the Macartney-Macdonald Line (also referred to as the Macdonald Line). Prior to that, the Aksai Chin area was inhabited and salt was their natural resource. Habitation in the flats can be traced clear to the Kunlun mountains in the east, which was the Sino-India Border prior to 1865 CPT Jack Durish

CPT Gurinder (Gene) Rana - Sounds heavenly. Salt was a valuable resource once upon a time. Still is in many parts of the world and maybe China needs some. But, the oil and minerals found in Siberia strike me as a far greater prize. From another point of view, count Chinese aggression in that area inspire any cooperation between India and Pakistan? Surely, any Chinese incursion into India could presage one into Pakistan...
