Saturday Night Special is just one of those slang terms that faded with time. It was usually an inexpensive handgun that was easy to pick up by anyone, either legally or illegally. While the vast majority were used by law abiding citizens to practice shooting or home defense, it was easy for criminals to obtain, hide and use. It also had the reputation as a weapon that hot heads would carry with them when they went out drinking on weekends,, hence the term "Saturday Night Special".
The term still has some relevance, as contrary to the anti-gunners claim about assault weapons being used in gun violence, most of the firearms are cheap handguns.
