We went on lock down for 3 days for a missing set of PVS-7. I can't imagine how long we'd be for a weapon.

Oddly enough, I can answer this. My unit at Irwin, one of the HQ sections lost their rifle out in the box. We were put on lockdown in the motor pool for 3 nights while we did Hands Across the Desert for 3 days. On the last day, we were told that an OC discovered the weapon 5 minutes after it was accidentally left behind and tracked down the unit via the SN for it, and turned it in that day. The same day we went into lock down. IOW, we were locked in the motor pool for 3 days while searching for a rifle that had already been re-secured into the vault.

That doesn't surprise me one bit. Things go missing there all the time, there are thousands of places where it could be hidden, or it could have been left on the ground & been ran over. There are places where the sand is so soft that it could have been pushed down and covered up.

That is true. I've seen it happen a few times while I was stationed there.
