SANDY GUERRIER HAS A FULL-TIME JOB in social services and lives in a nice three-bedroom house just outside Roslindale Square. Her refrigerator is stocked with organic greens and her dining room table is set with napkins folded inside wineglasses. On weekends, she and her three daughters like to visit the Museum of Science or take the commuter rail to explore new places out in the suburbs.
But every month Guerrier drains her bank account to the last penny. She has no car, no savings, no safety net.

This is why discussions about salaries are relative. 50K in the South or Midwest for a single mother would be doable. Prime example is a friend of mine has a daughter that here and her husband were both working in Columbus OH doing very well in the IT world. Nice cars, nice modest home two kids and were living very comfortable. He was offered a IT job in CA that doubled his salary. They jumped on it but when they got to CA they realized that all they could afford was a 2 bedroom Apartment and their living standards went down. you can make anything work if you really work at it and want to. 50K in Boston just isn't going anywhere for anyone. Should they make it a higher wage? Probably because they should have the money as much as they tax everyone up there.

the Problem is the Cost of Living in the areas... In the South 50 k would be a great Salary...

She is doing much better than me, my wife and two kids while I served a career on active duty. With no safety net and living check to check.
