It's really not though - despite how the media makes it seem. The violent crime rate is down considerably in the last 50 years.

It's still reasonably safe throughout the Midwest. I am sure if anyone were to do research on crime rates in Iowa, Nebraska, etc, you would find them probably pretty low compared to other areas.
Things like this have happened for years upon years we just hear more about (certain) cases more than others.
