I was in communications, and I can tell you we never could rely on uninterrupted electronic comms. Even on field ops we were constantly filing MIJI (Meaconing Intercept and Jamming Interference) reports. And it was well known the Soviets favorite tactic was to just jam the entire radio freq spectrum with extremely high powered equipment and go in with a pre-determined plan of attack, leaving us deaf and stunned. So I'd say the need for practicing all kinds of low tech communications is long overdue.
