The more realistic the better, but I would keep aspects of the KD course. 500 yds with iron sights is pretty good indication of your ability to shoot.

It sounds like they are still keeping the Regular 500 yd Course for regular qualification and using a tactical shooter qualification for deploying units. This is simular to Army and yes believe it or not Navy NECC/NSW units have to complete a CAT III Combat Tactical Shooter course (Because of supporting JTF'S and SOFT's down range) and depending on mission some need to complete a CAT IV Combat Shooters course (VBSS, Convoy Security, QRF and special Security Details). I know the Marine course will be way above these, but most branches are making these type of shooting courses mandatory for troops down range. The Navy units have to do same NECC/NSW Still have to do Navy CAT II course then deploying have to complete CAT III and or IV

The KD course and the PMI I learned in the Marines is the foundation of my marksmanship fundamentals. But I feel the Army pop up range is a much better qualification course. The benefits of the Army course are full battle gear, 40 targets hit or miss, multiple shooting positions out to 300 yards. Plus you are done in half a day, to a day depending on your unit size. The Marine qualification course always felt like a shooting competition to me. Although it is gratifying to hit targets with iron sights at 500 yards.
