The media, the politicians, and celebrities, most of whom couldn't write fizz-buzz (a common entry-level programming interview question), vastly overestimate the capabilities of AI now and in the near future. I suspect the driving force behind the hysteria is a.) politicians and bureaucrats wanting to grab additional regulatory power so they will have more to peddle, and b.) established firms in the industry that want to throw barriers to market entry in front of potential future competitors.
