My paternal grandfather and his brother served in the British Army in WWI and the fought in France and Belgium in the trench warfare where the French poppy flowers blossomed.
In WWI, the ground soaked up more blood than we can imagine. I recognize that this nation is focused on its own war dead; however, our numbers of war dead are dwarfed by those of our WWI and WWII allies and our enemies in every war since the Boer War.
As a historian I can't limit my thought to this nation.
