As Michigan lawmakers attempt to limit foreign land ownership in the interest of national security, the obscure ownership of large amounts of land presents a difficultly. A proposal approved earlier this month by the Republican-led Michigan House would bar entities from “foreign countries of concern” — China, Cuba, Iran, North Korea and Russia — from purchasing agricultural land in Michigan. Current foreign land owners would have to register with the state.
