The problem is he is an Obama appointee and their record so far in the Trump Administration has been to either leak, abruptly halt policy implementations or otherwise subvert the President.

NOPE!!! The Democrats are saying they will "refuse to consider or vote on" any Trump nominee unless a Special Prosecutor is appointed. As such, Trump should tell the Dems to kiss his butt and appoint Trey Gowdy. Then Senate majority Leader McConnell should use the "nuclear option" to confirm him in the Senate. Gowdy should reopen the Clinton e-mail investigation and Clinton Foundation investigation and then indict all concerned, as well as all involved in the felonious leaking of classified information and unmasking of American citizens.
If a Special Prosecutor is appointed for the "Russian Investigation". there should also be one for the Clinton issues.
