I honestly believe that the ability to fight any kind of protracted battle in the air, on the sea or land has been lost equally on both sides. Russia and China too may be well versed on conducting some show of force military parade for their leaders, but how often are they in the field planning for the real thing? The logistics of such a battle alone are mind boggling to say the least. Great article thanks for posting!

Can you elaborate about Russia's involvement in Syria? It was my understanding they were experiencing much the same as when they served a protracted war in Afghanistan with high casualty rate and no real tangible progress?
