Well, you still have to run the PFT. Whatever works for you is what is important. There are lots of fitness programs that will help you improve your time. Not all programs work for all people. Kinda like a diet in some ways.
I was never a great runner. My best 3 mile time was around 19 minutes and change. A full minute off the full score. I never worried too much about it. I was far better at humping lots of gear for lots of miles because of my height and stride and general build.

I considered being able to hump a lot of weight a long distance to be far more valuable than running 3 miles. When, in combat, will you ever run 3 miles in go fasters and shorts? Never is the answer.
