Yes CW5 Jack Cardwell the underequipped Italian "Esploratori Arditi" volunteers learned the hard way about frostbite and low-oxygen at higher elevations as they combatted the environment primarily and the Austrian mountain forces.
These zealous Italian volunteers had a lot in common with the Banzai Japanese soldiers in southeast and southern Asia as well the Pacific islands.
Mountain fighting an Urban fighting for infantry are generally the most challenging types of warfare. High ground may have a direct fire advantage; however, howitzer artillery can rake the high ground positions. In the mountains in WWI, moving howitzers uphill took mule-power and manpower and risked much.
