In August 2023, U.S. authorities encountered 232,972 people seeking to migrate at the U.S.-Mexico border. 56% were children, or parents and children. Most were seeking asylum: 145,278 were released into the U.S. interior with notices to appear in immigration court.
My question is if the boarder is so secure and "closed" why did 232,972 people try to enter in August of 2023?
I have to assume that in the minds of the hundreds of thousands of migrants who attempted to enter illegally, it was or was open enough to get in. If not then why did they attempt to cross illegally? Seems if you know you're going to get caught, apprehended, and returned it wouldn't be perceived as an open border.
Americans aren't stupid and blind to the facts and as a the majority of American voters perceive its open as well that is the reality as it is perceived.
That's just one month - if we extend that out that's over 1.7 million people each year. This does not include all the detected but not appended individuals.
Then there is the northern border with the same issue - again the same question if the borders are "closed" why are there 10 time the illegal border crossings at the Canadian border - it all about perception that the border is open.
