Wow, I did not know the Marines had done away with the Observer slot in their helo's. They all served honorably, firing the machine gun mounted in the bay door, and other official duties. I worked in my old fleet Marine squadron tabulating their flight hours along with the pilots.

And I of course completely understand, most certainly, as well, most interesting, obviously.

In the 80s I think they were called Naval Flight Officers. I could be wrong though. In my first Unit our XO had NFO wings, Tragically he died when an OV-10 went down in either 1982 or 83.

I realize why, however, andmim obv sorry to hear of what happapenednto him certainly, however, mobservermismdifferentmfrommnfo, for certain. Imdid a med qual for NFO, and passed, and had thought tomsubmitmfor intersvc transfer though I never actually did, of course, as it just proved impossible at that time. However, my dad was very nearly offered a chance to go for naval observer, which existed whennhe was in post ww2 andminnthe early 50s, he was Navy noncombatant as a Grumman tbm avenger aircraft mechanic, that much i do know positively, hope that helps explain, NFO is the Navy equiv of USAF nav just as naval aviator is the equivalent of USAF and army pilot, obv USMC follows Navy, of course, many thanks.
