Could have been executed better like the Italians did with Garands making them BM-59s.

Not currently. They had some years ago. They might have some M1 Garands they barreled to 7.62 NATO. The Navy conversions used a chamber spacer to make conversion from 30'06 to 7.62NATO. It was not very reliable.

On reflection, I wonder if there were any feeding problems encountered because of the "jump" the shorter 7.62 MM round would have to make to enter the chamber.
