From a purely objective point-of-view, The Marine could be eliminated, altogether. The ability to put Special Operators into a situation, in a very short period of time, to be followed up by Army units (in a very short period of time), the original purpose of the Corps no longer exists. JMO

Do you even know the original purpose of the Corps?

Cpl Lester Anderson - "From the Halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli". The Marines were the fighting men the Navy had on board. Wherever it went. Primarily for ship to ship fighting, but also as an attack force on land, if needed. There is a Constitutional authority for the creation and maintenance of a Navy (and its fighting force, Marines). There is no clause that allows for a standing Army. Any Army was supposed to be made up of state militia units and only for the purposes executing the Laws of the Union, suppressing Insurrections and repelling Invasions; Article 1 Section 8 Clause 15.
