New technology could eliminate long checkout lines for military shoppers

I haven’t been to the OFFUTT AFB commissary in a while, but I don’t remember self-checkouts. If they do have them, you’re damn right, Scott, those puppies are for, say, 15 items or less.

SCPO (Join to see) - Somtimes i try to run in and pick something up at lunch or something for supper onthe way home because I work on base and there they are...the ones withtwo carts at the dang self checkout. Thankfully they are the exception and not the norm but it does happen. We also have three self checkouts which is good.

Query to those of you that shop at the commissaries: Are the prices lower now that cashiers aren't ringing you out at the registers? If not, why not? Are they retaining the cashiers for other duties?
I haven't been in one for 20 years, but back then, the three that I had use of shoved everybody into one lane then separated again when getting near the registers. Food shopping usually took a couple of hours; 'express' lanes cut that down by maybe 10-15 minutes because you had to get into that single lane first. This was the main reason I stopped using them.

Prices are about the same or sometimes less than outside grocery stores. You just have to watch. Our commissary usually has better meats. Our commissary has 6 or 7 checkout lines and three self service so they move through there pretty quick. They still have the one lane to get you tot he registers but it moves pretty quick.
