I'm going to go out on a limb here.
I'm thinking that reporter gal filed her report for the day and went off to go enjoy Thanksgiving, rather than continue to monitor the President's super exciting planned schedule of golf and tweeting. She was caught unawares, but the President caught it and cast Newsweek with the fake news label.
Scapegoat gets canned.

That may be true and that sucks for her. However, the job of the journalist it to report the news as it happens (or happened) without bias or personal commentary, not to predict the news. As we all have our own biases, it is important to recognize them and make sure we are acting on informed decisions, especially if one's job is to report the news.
