The Air Force would have you think that they are crucial, because they are.
The Army has been dependent on air-based fires for decades. Artillery simply doesn't move in a manner to be relevant in many modern conflict situations, and it's use is often grossly restricted by ROE.
What the author has wrong is that most of our likely enemies simply do not have an effective tactical ground support capability that realistically threatens an Army formation in the field. DPRK, Iran, certainly not terrorist organizations... just don't have the capability.
Fortunately, we don't have to worry about having the USAF or Navy available. If one of the bigger, more capable powers want to challenge us, we will bring all of our toys.

Some good nuggets here, but they're found after sifting through the author's own bias and his selective interpretation of joint capabilities. Each service should recognize and understand their own strengths and weaknesses, and where they fit into the joint fight.

well they can always give the Tactical A/C and heavy Lift Helo's Back to the Army... But this has been a Bone of contention for over 50 years...
