Currently there are numerous job opportunities in Southern Louisiana(Lake Charles area) because of $64 Billion dollars worth of plant construction and modernization/expansion. some plants accept military experience in lieu of the Process Technology Degree but having a two year P-Tech degree moves you up in the line for consideration. I've worked in Manufacturing and Petrochemical/Plastics most of my post military career and most companies are facing a huge retirement bubble for those who hired into this industry post-Vietnam/Cold War. In my facility alone, we have 34 out of 98 people with 34 plus years of service who can retire in 2-5 years.
A great starting place is a Vo-Tech school that offers either Process Technology training or Craft Skill certification (industrial electrical-instrumentation, welding, pipefitting, etc..). I can't speak for the rest of the country but fully qualified craftsmen (men and women) are in high demand. The usual wage here in LA is $27.00-35/hour with overtime and great benefits. If you choose the field, you will work long hours just like the military but you will get overtime. Hope this helps.
