In general, beyond the issues with these guys, I think that modern media - the fact that if you run for office, you will get yourself and your family drug through the media circus - has dissuaded competent, mature, capable people from running for office. What we are left with is the Jerry Springer show. I think that applies across the political spectrum from left to right and in-between. There might be some exceptions, but you never know what's going to appear in the headlines tomorrow about somebody you had previously believed was relatively sane.
