Once again from a clinical experience, I have conducted root-cause analyses on active client suicides at a large CMHC in my area. The VA does the same w/ the minority of vets they serve.
Clinical depression, male gender, easy access to weapons, and alcohol abuse or similar psychoactive agents are core indicators of very high suicide risk. Among vets I see repeated excursions in a combat zone increases the risk dramatically due to recurring trauma and unresolved compacted grief.
As far as bipolar is concerned, persons very rarely kill themselves during mania, it is far more likely to occur in the more persisting depression phase.
