Al Nursa Front// (al Qaeda in Syria)/(Syrian foreign fighters) has been engaging and targeting Assad regime forces and state sites. The Al Nursa Front could fill the vacuum if ISIL is defeated militarily in Iraq and Syria. 60% of it's fighters identify with a religious and political ideology similar to ISIL. The defeat of ISIL is unlikely to end extremist groups from filling the vacuum left behind from ISIL. The threat of Salafi-jihadism will continue until the intellectual and theological ideology of ISIL is defeated as well.
In their latest offensive move they have taken a strategic hill near Aleppo even though there is currently a truce in place. The hill provides a point of observation for a wide area S. of Allepo and lies near a main highway linking Aleppo to Damascus
This is occurring even though there is currently a truce in place in Syria because the truce excludes ISIL and the Nusra Front. Air and land attacks by Syrian and allied forces continue in parts of Syria where the government says the groups are present.
