Pay increase my BUTT. He needs to refund the money he was already paid.

I'm glad we have a president smart enough to think ahead and realize there will be one additional former president in 2017 and so additional money will need to be appropriated to cover the costs of more former presidents. The amount of the pension is set by law at the amount of pay of a cabinent member, so this increase is not a pay raise for Obama or any former presidents. But someone just scanning the headline without reading the article might get the false impression that Obama was giving himself a raise.

The pension is set by law, just like military pay. It is increased in a similar manner. The article (and my own summary) may be misleading in that they don't make clear the 17.9% includes travel budget, security, mail budget, transportation, housing, entertainment and other items. The pension is less than a quarter of what they receive. Clinton received $924,000 in taxpayer dollars last year by way of the Former Presidents Act. Money is fungible, meaning any budget money the president can use towards those things makes more of his pension available for "fun" stuff. He is proposing giving himself (and the other ex-presidents) a large raise, no matter how you slice it.

No he isn't. The additional appropriation is because there will be one additional ex president in 2017 Not that existing presidents get a raise
