Operation Downfall - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Operation Downfall was the planned invasion of the Japanese Home Islands during World War II. The casualties expected during the invasion were expected to be staggering. Thankfully, Japan surrendered and this operation was cancelled. Trivia: When planning this operation, the War Department ordered a large amount of Purple Hearts. All Purple Hearts awarded since World War II come from this large order.
