I remember watching a news cast on BBC in which they were interviewing an officer who had been on the Siachen glacier (I think Pakistani, don't remember), and he was telling the interviewer that his unit had experienced only one casualty due to enemy action, and numerous others due to pulmonary edema brought on by the altitude.

Pulmonary edema is not the main cause of death on Siachen and Saltoro; frost bite due to the -40℃ to -60℃ temperatures on the Glacier and on the Ridge. The altitude contributes to the cause of this mass casualties. This is why both India and Pakistan withdraw their forces from those heights in winter and 're-man those posts again in spring SGT (Join to see)
