NO they are not. They still won't guarantee our government won't do something to take away our rights...or our lives.

For a change, at least this article did partially address some of the possible reasons behind the problem: "we must focus more intently on the major underlying causes of the gun violence: untreated mental health problems that increase the risk of suicide and interpersonal violence, gang and drug activity that drive illegal black market firearm transfers, and the lack of economic and educational opportunities that lead to cycles of poverty and crime."

The author just does not tell us how we can do this.

Gun violence is a leftist buzzword. It is violence wherein the perp had a gun, had there not been a gun available, there would have still been violence using something else as the weapon.

SGT (Join to see) - We have no way to know that. Convenience of a weapon may accelerate the action. Without easy access, perhaps the anger or whatever ignites the action may possibly pass. No way we can know.

Sometimes problems fix themselves if the punishment is swift and meets the crime. If you really want to get public attention one could always resort to methods (found in some other cultures) to dissuade the would-be evil doer.
When apprehended in the act of committing "foul deeds" the perpetrator is taken to the nearest lamp post or overpass, disemboweled and left hanging by one foot until the leg pulls away from the body. Horrible as this sounds, the swift certainty of the punishment and the severity with which it is meted out, will make mass murder a less attractive method for getting attention.

CPT (Join to see) - I have heard that argument all my life. However, I would ask, if harsh punishment worked, why does the world still suffer crime?
IMO, that answer is simple. Most evil-doers think they are smart enough to never get caught. Our prisons are full of such people. The fear of punishment may deter some, but not nearly enough.
No, to deter crime 100%, we must first address the reasons behind various crimes. Even then of course we will not succeed, maybe just slow it down some degree.
