There's possibly another way to view this. I know very few Christians who believe Christ was born on the 25th of December, or that everything from the Christmas Tree, to "pretty papers...pretty ribbons of blue", have anything to do with that event. Obviously the Romans; masters at cultural assimilation, took what they liked and blended it all up into a fine, frolicking mess as they transitioned from a pagan, to ostensibly "Christian" society themselves. However, more than a millennia and a half or so later...these pastiches have come to represent something wholly different; a celebration of family, peace, the brotherhood of mankind...and for those who believe, the arrival of a man who sacrificed everything for the sake of the love embodied in all of the above. We could get as easily worked up over the fact that the days of week are named after pagan gods...or we could just be happy it's Friday my friend.
