I visited Pakistan in the 80s when my ship pulled into Kirachi for four days. It was a very interesting place. Some of the poorest people I have ever seen were there. It was disconcerting to ride around all day in a car in which none of the gages worked. And it was the only country I have ever been to where I didn't eat any local food or drink anything that didn't come in a bottle. (A wise decision, as a third of the ship came down with the "Pakistani screamers" after we left port.) But people were mostly very friendly, didn't automatically hate Americans, and knowing just a few words of Urdu made a very favorable impression on them.

But I'd never go back there.
