“more consistent laws nationwide, requiring adults to safely secure their guns out of the reach of children and others unauthorized to use them. They have also highlighted a lack of public education on the responsibility of gun owners to store their guns unloaded, locked and away from ammunition, CNN previously reported.”
Only my rifles are stored unloaded, in a locked safe. My handguns are either loaded with one in the pipe on my person or in the ready condition in one of my locked bedside safes. Of more importance is teaching your young children or grandchildren what to do and not do if they ever come upon a firearm, loaded or not.
It’s important to start early in teaching firearms safety to children at a young age. It’s too bad that every school doesn’t offer the NRA Eddie the Eagle gun safety programs.

Good advice, otherwise, this inculcates a very dangerous message. All of the safety measures and become null and void.

A good way to get the messsge across when kids are young is to put hearing protection on them, take them to a safe environment for shooting. The family farm in NC was a great place. Get somebjugs of water or some melons and then show them what happens when they get hit by a bullet. It is a lesson they never forget SSgt (Join to see)!

I taught my children very early to not touch unless I am there and am allowing it. Slides or bolts always locked to the rear. Supper safe. Now as they are pre-teens, I am starting to lock and double lock more as the teen years are challenging.
