His smirks after responding to questions indicates he was lying; basically telling the Congress, yeah I'm biased, but you can't prove my bias affected my work. Arrogance and narcissism coupled with classic cognitive dissonance! He may believe he's in the right, but he also knows he's in the wrong. His lies are nothing but narcissistic self-preservation.

There was likely a time when agent Strzok was a hard charging agent and he did a great job and started moving up the food chain. Somewhere along the line, he developed an arrogance, a bullet proof attitude. It was likely because he was promoted too quickly and no one above him paid close enough attention to observable behavioral issues.
We can see the manifestation of those behavioral issues in his reckless behavior in his marriage. Cheating on his wife and family and doing so as the head of counterintelligence for the FBI leaving himself wide open for someone to leverage him. He is smarter than everyone else though and he can live a lie.
His disdain/hatred for Trump and his willingness to let that flow out of him in the form of text messages likely pales in comparison to what he said in intimate get togethers with like minded people. Being placed in charge of two of the most politically charged investigations of a generation and not recusing himself speaks to his arrogance and belief that he somehow can do what any other significantly biased person cannot, namely, set aside his bias and allow it to have zero impact on his work.
Bias, a disdain for someone or a "too close" relationship with someone or an investment in a company are all reasons some will recuse themselves from being involved in an investigation/case/trial etc. Strzok wanted to be involved because of his bias. He wanted to hurt Trump and he sad so.
We know that he cannot maintain his oath/vows in his most intimate relationship, his marriage. We also know he cannot maintain his oath to the FBI and his country. He has let his bias cloud two massively political investigations and he has tarnished the FBI violating a number of policies and procedures. And he thinks he has done it all right, imagine that.

Promoted too quickly, but what if those above believed he was of like mind. That amount of arrogance has to come from pure narcissism or someone gave him a pass which he took advantage of.
