Disgusting at the least that Navy brass and civilian bosses arbitrarily enact such a drastic personnel change without even giving the appearance of caring for any input from the sailors. Flys in the face and shames Navy brass boiler-plate proclamations about 'sensitive' leadership and leaders who care for and about troops. When you get down to the nutt-cutting, the Navy could actually care less what the sailors think or feel about anything so long as they obey orders w/o question. Navy brass got the nod from uncaring and detached civilian bosses who shrugged it off as a personnel matter. Actions speak louder than words as the saying goes.

I honestly think it was a PC-related move. I can't get my thoughts wrapped around another reason for this.

Ahh yes the Good idea Fairy strikes again. Sadly I understand the madness (where is the rubber room please)
In this PC drivin culture there is a concentrated effort to emasculate males point blank on that one. The Navy has taken the far left position of removing the word MAN from everywhere. At this point I am surprised to see "Male Head" written on any door. While the above is meant more satirical than not it does hold truth.
The other reason is manning (ya pun intended) By lumping every rate under one of 5 umbrellas the Navy can now shift and adjust personnel to positions that would be more advantageous for the Navy. The "sell" is to say its for a more rounded Sailor or to "give" sailors more flexibility in picking orders. Both are lies.
The Navy as with all branches is encountering a loss of personnel but with a high mission tempo they need to keep the seats hot and full. What better way than to FORCE people to work positions they need filled. By lumping large groups that have loosely similar jobs you can push people to the seats you need filled. I will used this example.
Cooks, Barbers, Supply, Admin, fall under the same umbrella. If you have an extra cook but you don't have any barbers... guess who better figure out how to cut hair..... if you have extra people in Admin but not enough people to cook guess who is going to be making your eggs for breakfast....
The thought process is its good for the Navy and if anyone doesn't like it or fights it we will fall back on PC culture to force it. They will also hit Sailors in Evals for not being "rounded" enough by taking on the jobs they are not trained in or have an interest in doing.
