Thanks for reminding us TSgt Joe C. that Philip Kearny was born on June 2, 1815.
He was a well-respected officer who as many of the civil war military leaders had serve with officers who later served on the other side. Robert E. Lee remembers him from his gallantry in the US-Mexican War.
After he was shot when he accidentally rode behind Confederate lines at Chantilly, Virginia. Out of respect CSA General Robert E. Lee returned his body under a flag of truce. Lee later bought Kearny’s saber, saddle, and horse from the Confederate Quartermaster Department, and returned them to Kearny’s wife.
