To do so, social media seeks to minimize what is known as entropy, which is basically equivalent to minimizing information. "

There is a lot more to it than that - but yes - an ads engine is the main purpose. However, FB, Twitter, YouTube, et al have found ways to tweak the amplifiers, discriminators and attenuators in the various noises to emphasize or deemphasize messaging. This is HOW messages with a conservative bent get suppressed while liberal messages get more amplified.
