Anytime there is a loss of life, we need to do everything in our power to make sure it doesn't happen again. Training, flight hours should never be compromised.

I'll make a wild guess and attribute the trend to reduced force/funding with a little no to decrease in aviation taskings. While the land portions roll has generally slimmed down, aviation is typically busy regardless of deployments. So what you see is a huge demand for aviation support with less people/money in garrison, when units are supposed to retrain and refit. Example: Units putting off training or maintenance until deployment money kicks in. Couple that with loss of experienced personnel and you see huge cracks in the machine. Any Marine aviator's have any input?

Very true. When the buck stops, the first thing goes is training. Training for the maintenance crews, pilots, and ops. Everything is dependable upon your funding to train properly. This is where experience and knowledge comes in play.

Could be, but it seems too easy and convenient to put the blame solely on pilot error. They tried doing the same thing with some recent airline crashes, and it didn't add up.
