Thanks for reminding us about the British interception of the Zimmermann Telegram from German Foreign Secretary Arthur Zimmermann to the German ambassador to Mexico proposing a Mexican-German alliance in the event of a war between the U.S. and Germany TSgt Joe C..
My paternal grandfather and his brother were lance corporals in the British Army in WWI. France, Belgium and Great Britain bore the bulk of the allied casualties on the western front.
The interception and decoding of the Zimmerman Telegram was an intelligence coup which could not be immediately divulged.
The sinking of the RMS Lusitania by a German U-boat seemed to be sufficient cause to bring us into the war because so many USA citizens were killed.
